Gather & Grow
Building neighborhood food ecosystems that last. The Blackstead Collective is a Detroit-based 501(c)(3) that designs and stewards neighborhood-scale food ecosystems rooted in land, culture, and collective care.
What We Build
The Blackstead Collective centers neighborhoods as the unit of change by working with communities to build systems that nourish people today. We focus on the physical, social, and cultural infrastructure communities need to grow, share, and sustain food locally; we call this food ecosystem. Rather than operating programs or delivering short-term services, we design and support
systems that can be stewarded by communities over time. Our work treats food as essential neighborhood infrastructure — something that must be intentionally designed, collectively
maintained, and rooted in place.

Why Food Ecosystems Matter
Food systems break down when communities are disconnected from land, knowledge, and one another. Neighborhood food ecosystems restore those connections. They create pathways for people to grow food, share skills, circulate resources, and build resilience at the local level. When designed intentionally, these systems strengthen health, culture, and long-term
community stability.
Cultivating Community
We work alongside growers, educators, residents, and organizations who bring lived experience, local knowledge, and long-term commitment to their neighborhoods. Our partnerships are collaborative by design — grounded in trust, clarity, and shared responsibility. The Blackstead Collective convenes, aligns, and supports these relationships so we can function more comprehensively than any single organization.
An Invitation To Build
If you are working toward food sovereignty, land stewardship, or neighborhood resilience, there may be a place for you in the ecosystem.
Whether as a collaborator, land steward, educator, or institutional partner, we invite alignment with the work of building food systems that endure.
